Mike Swan

Mike’s athletic career began in high school, when he competed in swimming as Captain of the Timberline Blazers Varsity Swim Team. On a dare from his father, he completed his first triathlon in 1987, and went on to win his age group in his first Half-Ironman distance triathlon in 1988 in his hometown of Olympia, Washington. During his undergraduate years at UCSB, Mike raced on the Cycling Team and joined the Triathlon Team in its first year. In 1992, Mike qualified for the first time for the Ironman World Championships, where he placed third in his 18-24 age group. Mike has competed at Ironman Kona eight times so far – in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001 and – returning after a 21-year break – in 2022.

Mike ran his first ultra marathon at the Avalon 50 Miler in 1999, placing second, and went on to place second again in 2001 and 2002, and place third in 2003. Mike ran the Western States 100 in 2003, finishing in 23:32. He has continued to run competitively in ultra marathons, including the White River 50, Way too Cool 50k, Bulldog 50k, Santa Barbara Nine Trails, and Santa Barbara Red Rock races. Mike has also competed in numerous road races, including his first Boston Marathon at the age of 49 with a finishing time of 2:54. Mike has also raced at the USATF Cross-Country Nationals several times as a member of the highly-competitive Santa Barbara Running and Racing Masters Team.

Mike has been a physical therapist in Santa Barbara since 1996 and has made it his life’s calling to heal patients, enhance their movement, and improve their athletic performance. Mike opened Elite Performance and Rehabilitation in 2002 and is one of the founding members of THE LAB in Santa Barbara.

Mike’s passion for athletics and experience in the triathlon led him to begin training triathletes in 1997. Over the past 25 years, Mike has coached dozens of triathletes to Ironman finishes. In 2005, Mike teamed up with Rusty Snow and, as Santa Barbara Running and Racing, they have coached hundreds of local runners of all abilities, helping them achieve their personal bests on the roads and trails.
